Dutch dramatic-coloratura soprano Marene Elgershuizen finished her Bachelor’s degree in 2013 within the “Excellence Program” at the Prince Claus Conservatorium. She received her Master’s degree from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam and concluded those studies with two years learning in Germany supported by the prestigious Prince Bernhard Culture Fund, the VSB Fund and the dr. Hendrik Müller Patriotic Fund. In Berlin and near München, Kammersängerin Gabriele Schnaut and well-known dramatic soprano Janice Baird formed her in the German Fach. Marene took repertoire coachings by Graham Cox, John Norris and Klaus Sallman (Staatsoper Unter den Linden).
Marene took masterclasses by Margreet Honig, Gerd Uecker, Camilla Nylund, Soile Isoloski, Nadine Secunde, Jard van Nes, Ira Siff a.o. She was a participant at the Internationale Opernakademie Schwerte, Düsseldorf in 2013 and in 2014 she took part in the first Bad-Saarow Meisterkurs by Thomas Johannes Mayer.
Already in 2009 Marene made her solo debut in Reinhard Keiser’s Markus Passion. In 2011 she received great praise for her performance in Beethoven’s Mass in C and Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Psalm 42: “In Psalm 42 soprano Marene Elgershuizen could again let us know separately what she was worth, and that is a lot” - Friesch Dagblad. “The most beautiful solo appearance came from soprano Marene Elgershuizen. With a crystal clear sound she phrased he texts so, that every word fell totally in its place” – Leeuwarder Courant. Also her contribution to the Opus Project Choir of 2012 and her continuous performances of Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem (Delft Orchestra) and Berlioz’ Les Nuits d’Été received allround acknowledgement by the Dutch press. In 2017 her "Libera me" in Verdi's great Requiem was coined as "Most memorable!" - GVNL. In March 2019 Marene made her debut in the Grote zaal of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, singing the mezzo part in Duruflé's Requiem and the dazzling high notes of Orff's Carmina Burana.
Finding her niche, Marene has specialised in her beloved German repertoire: Mozart, Strauss, Berg, Mahler a.o. She has already performed the Vier Letzte Lieder, the Sieben Frühe Lieder and Das Himmlische Leben (4th Symphony) and of course the opera roles of the Queen of the Night, Fiordiligi (Opera Nijetrijne 2015) and Konstanze.
Past opera performance experience includes Liù for the Weekend Opera Utrecht in the new TivoliVredenburg (2014), Soeur Constance (Dialogues, Poulenc), Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) and in London Aufseherin/Vertraute in Strauss’s Elektra (2014).
Marene also loves modern works with a strong historical theme like Adams’s Nixon in China and Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony. But also Scandinavian gems by Sibelius, Grieg, Nystroem and Sallinen.
At the Peter the Great Festival of 2010 Marene was the first classical singer to be awarded the Labberté-Hoedemaker Prize, as decoration for her musicianship. A year later she received the much sought after full Labberté-Hoedemaker Fund Scholarship. In 2013 Marene won the first prize in the Euregio Vokalisten Wettbewerb, Heek-Nienborg (Germany). Her technical control was specifically pointed out by the jury. In 2011 Marene gained a place in the Semi-Finals of the International Oratorio Competition in Rome and in 2012 she was selected to be participant in the Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours. Besides that she was able to sing a few small recitals in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw. At the Quarter Finals of 49th International Vocal Competition in ’s Hertogenbosch she made a strong impression to jury, public and peers.
Another Meisterkurs Stipendium was awarded to her in 2014 by the Universität der Künste in Berlin. And in 2015 she received the prestigious Wagner Stipendium of the Richard-Wagner Verband Berlin-Brandenburg. This record made Marene in 2019 an advisor in the Amsterdam committee for assessing grant applications at the VSBfund.
She worked with conductors like Frank Hameleers, Bernhard Touwen, Lex Bergink, Iassen Raykov, Hans Lamers, Pieter Cox, Paul Waerts, Gilles Michels, Louis Buskens, Jan van Maanen, Yt Nicolai, Andrew Charity, Geert-Jan van Beijeren, Bergen en Henegouwen, Peter Gaasterland, Merlijn Twaalfhoven, Anne Sollie, Adrían Rodríguez van der Spoel, Arnaud van Gelder and Chris Fictoor. She received coachings by Jules van Hessen and Ed Spanjaard.
Marene forms a Lied-duo with acclaimed pianist Aleg Tryfanenkau, with whom she has been building a broad repertoire stretching from Schubert to Wagner and Faure to Sibelius. They regularly perform their programs throughout the country.
Marene also holds an MPhil research degree in Modern History and International Relations, specialising in Genocide Studies, Conflict Studies and Egodocuments. Besides her singing career Marene stays committed to the cause of LGBT-rights and Women’s rights.
